Nothing wrong with cowboys I just ain't one, I know a bunch good friends that are but I'm a ball cap and work boots kind of guy. Nothing sillier looking then a drug store cowboy to me. Dad had 125 head but ours were pretty tame a few high headed (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) .. ( beeches ) .but my uncle's were a different story he was old and never got out on the ground with them, always in the tractor or pickup , even his new lincoln. cows were just fine till ya got out on the ground then look out it was tails to the wind ! I always thought the old guys were so brave to stand their ground when they came charging... now that im old and crippled up i realise if they could have moved they woulda been over on the high fence with us kids !! Down sized trucks and cars about eliminated hats, and them danged head supports didn't help. Fedora is my style, even when I was riding for $300 & found per month. Texas style hats never were used much on horse back, the big brim would get it knocked off a hundred different ways. A man would spend three fourths his time chasing it in the wind and anyone that did wear wide hats crimped the brims up tight so they could get close enough to get on a horse. The Truman style was lot more common around stock, ime. The movies are where the big hats got the most use. |

I like it cause it keeps the rain and snow off of the back of my neck, ears and most all my head. Hope it last me the rest of my days. Even joke to my son that I want my ashes put in it and he can keep it on a shelf upside down with me in it!! Remember "Forbidden Fruit makes many Jams" |

It's got a worn thru spot on the front crown, I've got a few of those spots too. The inner band is giving way, and the brim has long ago lost its up sweep. It still keeps the rain and snow from getting where I don't want it, and it covers the span from eye to my scope to keep the sun out. Tipped right it still enhances my hearing greatly. For all I've put it thru it's held up maybe a bit better than me. If you recall the movie Culpepper Cattle Company I think they showed the most realistic representations of yesteryear western hats. Always had at least 4 around good straw for town and a palmleaf for work in the summer and at least one town felt and a church felt plus a work felt. Always preferred a 10x flat square crown. Still have my dad's hat with the Burt Reynolds feather hat band. As for spurs when I rode 8 to 10 hours a day I had 2 sets of boots one for work with my spurs always left on and a after work town set. But Monday thru Saturday I walked out every morning with spurs and ended up in town on occasion in spurs. But always took them off before going to the bar lol. Unless I was getting a to go cup. Not handy enough for a flat brim hat and always thought those taco hats were for guys that spent more time in the truck then the saddle. Last edited by nvwrangler; 11/11/18 10:40 PM. |

When I ride all day , I dont even think of my bumpers ( a milder shaped spur for dressage) and get groceries or whatever else on the way back to the house . I am tired and just like anyone else in their work clothes, I take care of my chores in town with full riding gear on, spurs and all. Just the way of life here, why change different cloths an gear just to go to town. I grew up wearing one but I don't have cattle or sheep now but I do still wear one all summer and fall. I work at the ranch and they serve a purpose just more then being a cowboy. Give me a fish, I will eat for a day. Teach me to fish, I will eat for a lifetime |

I can clearly hear those light toned chimes in cadence as he walked. To this day, when I hear any remotely like that, the memories of growing up riding with him come flooding back....yes lots of good memories. |

![]() trapper Joined: Nov 2016 Posts: 59 KS | I buy the cheap twister hats with holes all the way around the crown and a 4 1/4 or 4 1/2 inch brim for the summer. I call them disposable cowboy hats, because they only last a season, but they are a life saver for redheads like me. For the winter, I have a more expensive felt hat. You really get what you pay for with the felts. But I still can't justify spending $500-$600 on a high quality 50% beaver hat. Even if they do last a lifetime. And for the guys that say wide brim hats aren't for real working cowboys, I would gladly tell you to eat s***. If youre having problems with them blowing off, line the inside with selfadhesive foam weather stripping. That will help a hat form to your head better. Before I learned that, I would always soak them and wear them dry. Both ways work to a degree. If you live where there's constant straight line winds, I hear stampede strings still work just fine. |

Wear a ball cap every day. Staw hat if I'm going to be outside all day in the summer sun. Got a couple beaver hats. Put a rattle snake band on one and have a nice black Stetson for those times I need to wear a suit. Don't like riding boots for everyday wear. Got a couple pairs for dress up though. Not sure why beaver felt is so speedy these days, when you can't hardly give the pelts away. I've wore felt hats all my life. My favorite brand for many years was hats made by the American Hat Company. The original company folded up a while back and now some other outfit took over the name and I don't care for their hats anymore. Have owned a fair share of Stetsons and Resistols, both make good hats. Used to wear them a lot in the winter, but more inclined to wear a fur hat these days when it's cold. Rarely do any winter horseback riding any more either. This picture is of me and two of my brothers, taken in '63. I'm on the left, (wearing moose hide chaps and moose hide mittens). Homestead days, rough times, before we had snow machines and we rode horses year round. If our ears got cold we would fold up a wild rag so it was a band about 3 inches wide and tie it over our ears then pull the hat down over it. I had just got back from a cold 14 mile round trip that day. This is a bit more recent, spring beaver trapping, in April. Usually still have a lot of snow in April but not so much the last couple years. Horses is the best way to get around for me for spring beaver. Usually freezing hard at night and thawing during the day, so still use the wild rag for cold mornings. But yeah, I may not wear them all the time, but still wouldn't be without a big hat!! |

I have very fair skin so I've worn a straw or palm leaf hat in the summer for years just for the shade, but how about when the weather turns wet and colder? Looking for something to wear in between the straw hat and when it gets cold enough to wear the stormy kromer. Only felt that I ever owned was a black dress Stetson when I was assigned to a cavalry squadron in the army. Needs to be a darker color, I do a lot of Denning and calling so a light hat really stands out. "I'm all in favor of keeping dangerous weapons out of the hands of fools. That top pic is a cool photo |

Freezing my ears and sinus got old, and for winter I wear a madbomber (fur) and those military tank liner hats. For summer it is the farmer baseball hat to keep the sun out. Actually wore one of those old duck hunter Jones hats for years with the back turned down. Looked like Mushmouth from Fat Albert but that thing stayed no matter how hard the horse played. |

Boots and hats are things I like to collect. I do building and home maintenance and don't wear one daily because it gets in the way crawling under a sink or in an attic. I wear one working on the farm and on Sundays after Church. Spending time with kids outdoors will built memories that last a lifetime. |

Nothing wrong with cowboys I just ain't one, I know a bunch good friends that are but I'm a ball cap and work boots kind of guy. Nothing sillier looking then a drug store cowboy to me. I go to church with a guy who wears a cowboy hat and he wears a western style vest and cowboy boots as well. He also sports that dinnerplate size belt buckle. I wear broke down cowboy boots. I think we're the only two guys in the northeast that do. No self-respecting man should be seen wearing sneakers. Last edited by Posco; 11/16/21 12:10 PM. |

My sentiments exactly. I definitely appreciate the style on a dyed-in-the-wool rancher/farmer, but a city boy like me would look just dumb in the cowboy getup.
